Message formatting and embeds

Write readable messages, use the right placeholders and preview an embed before sending it.

Text and placeholders

Discord messages support formatting such as **bold**, *italic* and line breaks. Use the variables listed beside the particular editor: a placeholder supported in a welcome message is not necessarily supported by a timer or custom command.

Discord mentions use IDs: <@USER_ID> for a member, <@&ROLE_ID> for a role and <#CHANNEL_ID> for a channel link. Replace the placeholder with the real ID. Whether a mention notifies someone depends on the feature’s mention settings and Discord permissions.

Keep messages short enough for the limit shown by the editor. Check links and intended recipients before enabling an automated message.

Send an embed

  1. Open Embed composer from your server dashboard. It requires premium and the appropriate server access.
  2. Choose a channel and fill in the title, description, colour and optional author, images, fields and footer. Use HTTPS image URLs.
  3. Review the preview and destination, then confirm Send. Discord performs the final Markdown rendering; the website preview is a guide.

Common questions

Can automated messages include formatting and mentions?
Use Discord formatting and the variables listed beside each editor. Mentions use Discord IDs, and whether they notify someone depends on the feature and its permissions. The embed composer disables mentions, so it never pings members or roles.
